Investment in Community

Yeppoon Wesleyan Methodist Church held their first Family Camp for many years over the Easter long weekend. We checked into the Cockscomb Veteran Retreat on Good Friday after our morning church service and began a fantastic time of relaxation! No phones, no technology, no worries! Such a wonderful time of focusing on God’s Creation and His teaching for us in a back-to-basics venue.

The feedback from the weekend reported that one of the best investments was time getting to know church family better. The children all played like one big happy family and even the adults had fun learning patience with each other around the table playing the board game Sequence. Many were blessed to get to know people they wouldn’t normally get to chat, laugh and share with. Myrtle even ate damper around the campfire for the first time.

We were also blessed with the investment Dr Don Hardgrave made into preparing messages packed full of church history, bible truths and as Mimi testified, “a burst of hope that God’s got a BRILLIANT plan and we are all in it!” These quality times strengthened us all with both knowledge and renewed faith in our awesome God of detail. On Saturday night we held an emotional “fire night” where we were asked to write on a piece of paper what we needed forgiveness from God for and who we needed to forgive. We presented these silently and prayerfully to God and then symbolically tossed them into the flames to be dealt with. Dr Don also allowed a time of Q & A on Sunday night for us all to ask for wisdom to help understand the created world and scripture better. Even a young teen in attendance asked some very thoughtful questions of Dr Don.

A testimony from the Knobel family gives insight into the investment into their family over the weekend: “For our family seeing how much our children got involved was a highlight (for us). Brock (12) was listening to the sessions and asking us questions afterwards. He loved learning about some of the proofs of creation and Alyssa understood the concept on the Saturday night when we wrote the lists and burnt them. She participated in this. So our kids growing in Christ was a wonderful investment from the weekend.”

Will we do it all again next year? A resounding yes was the answer given by all!
